Public sector staff complete 5K their way in the sunshine!
Up to 700 public sector staff gathered in the sunshine at Hackney Marshes to walk, jog and run 5K with their colleagues on Wednesday 2nd July 2014.
The 5K event is the final stage of the 5K Your Way Programme; a physical activity initiative for the workplace by the new sport and physical activity partnership for London, London Sport, and delivered by Motivate Health and Fitness. This year’s 5K event at Hackney Marshes was hosted and supported by Better Leisure Centres and Hackney Council. 5K Your Way aims to encourage staff of participating public sector organisations to take up walking, jogging and running through attendance at weekly workplace training sessions, in the lead up to the 5K Your Way event.
700 public sector colleagues from 14 teams completed the 5km route around the marshes in gorgeous sunshine in one of the best days of the year. The fastest finishing male and female were Simon Coombes (15min 45sec) of Islington and Tereza Francoza (20mins 35secs) of GLL.
The Most Active Workplace Award was won by Hackney for achieving the highest training session attendance, and the Fittest Workplace Award, went to GLL for having the top twenty fastest finishers.
Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Sharon Patrick, said: “The Council was delighted to host 5K Your Way in Hackney Marshes which is also in the ward I represent, Kings Ward.
“The Council is always looking for ways to get those who live, work or study in the borough to become more active, and this event was perfect because it encouraged people of all abilities to move more.
“Well done to the Hackney Council team who won the Most Active Workplace Award after achieving the highest training session attendance.”
Eighteen public sector staff not associated to a registered organisation also had the opportunity to experience the 5K Your Way programme, by joining the Workplace Challenge team. The aim of the Work Place Challenge is to promote sport, physical activity and health improvements across England’s workplaces; www.workplacechallenge.org.uk/London.
Participant registration for the event included a donation to each team’s chosen charity. The total charitable donations raised from this year’s 5K Your Way event exceeded £3.5k.
