A More Active and Successful East London

Safeguarding and Child Protection

Safeguarding and Child Protection

Pro-Active East London is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and young people in sport.

We have produced a child protection policy to help safeguard and protect young people in sport and physical activity which is based upon good practice and is informed through legislation. The policy has been developed in association with the child protection in sport unit and in consultation with a range of partners from around the sub-region.

We have also developed a toolkit which you can access via the "promoting best practice page".

If you have a child protection concern or issue that you would like to discuss you can contact our Designated Child Protection Officer – Claire Wheeler 020 8223 6218 or 07595 271 916.

Let us know what you think - your views are important to us, please take a few moments to complete our questionnaire on these Child Protection pages.

Pro-Active East London works at a strategic level and is not involved in direct delivery of sport, rather to enable, facilitate and support our partners in the sub-region who undertake the direct delivery of sport. In the context of child protection our work will be predominantly in the following areas:

  • Promotion of minimum safeguarding standards for deliverers in the sub-region (good practice)
  • Provision of support, advice and appropriate training (through partners) for organisations in the sub-region

  • Ensuring the sub-contracting of any delivery of activities is protected through clear guidelines on safeguarding children/vulnerable adults

  • Provision of advocacy on child protection issues at a strategic level

Pro-Active East London is committed to working towards achievement of the National Standards for Safeguarding & Protecting Children; a benchmark of good practice for sports organisations. Having achieved the Preliminary and Intermediate Levels, Pro Active East London is currently working towards the Advanced level.

Independent Safeguarding Authority

The Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) has announced that it will go live from October 12 2009. Individuals will need to register with the ISA if they are to work or volunteer with children and/or vulnerable adults in a regulated activity (including delivery of sports or physical activities). The cost for an individual to apply to register with the ISA will be a one-off, lifetime fee of £64.00. You will be able to check an individual’s ISA-registration status online or as part of an Enhanced CRB check.

The Criminal Records Bureau welcomes the launch of the new ISA service as it will enhance the current level of protection afforded by CRB checks. The ISA will remove the most dangerous people from the children and vulnerable adults’ workforce and the CRB will continue to provide you with the person’s criminal record and other relevant information through the CRB check.

The CRB will provide you with a one-stop-shop for access to both of these checks. When used together, a CRB and ISA check will provide you with the most comprehensive vetting and checking service on offer in the world today.

The new ISA service is still at the early stages of development and as a result not all of your questions can be answered at present. In the meantime, The Criminal Records Bureau have produced a set of questions and answers that should explain what they currently know about the ISA Scheme. For the latest information coming out from the ISA and its new service please visit the ISA’s website www.isa-gov.org where you can register to receive regular updates.

The Child Protection in Sport Unit produced a briefing paper in July 2009 on the ISA which you can access here

The CRB will develop a dedicated section of their website relating to the ISA registration and application process
